Description

Dhansak curry is a popular dish in the Parsi cuisine, which originated from the Parsi community in India. The Parsis are Zoroastrians who migrated to India from Persia (modern-day Iran) around the 8th century.

The word “dhansak” is derived from two Persian words, “dhan” meaning rice and “sak” meaning vegetable stew. Dhansak curry combines elements of Persian and Indian cuisine, creating a unique and flavorful dish.

The origins of dhansak can be traced back to the Persian dish “khoresht,” which is a slow-cooked stew made with meat, lentils, and vegetables. When the Parsis settled in India, they adapted the Persian dish to local ingredients and flavours, resulting in the development of dhansak curry.

Traditionally, dhansak curry is made with mutton (goat meat), lentils, and a variety of vegetables such as pumpkin, eggplant, and fenugreek leaves. The dish is seasoned with a blend of spices, including cumin, coriander, turmeric, ginger, and garlic, which give it a rich and aromatic flavour.

Dhansak curry is often served with brown rice and accompanied by a side of “kachumber” salad, which is made with chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and fresh herbs.

Today, dhansak curry continues to be a popular dish among the Parsi community and is also enjoyed by people from different cultural backgrounds. It is often prepared during special occasions, festivals, and weddings, showcasing the culinary heritage of the Parsi community in India.
